It must have been close to Christmas, but on which side, I don't quite remember. I suspect it was sometime in the January doldrums when all was frozen and gray. My friend Walter decided it was a good day for a dog. To get one, that is. "I know I'm me, because my little dog knows me," Walter once quoted Gertrude Stein. With his boyfriend Joseph away in the hospital, the house had an unaccustomed empty feeling. And it had been without a dog for too long. The shelter was in Ann Arbor . We piled festively into the car for the outing. It didn't take long to find her, a black and white ragamuffin puppy, so excited to see us that her tail seemed to wag her whole body. "This one?" I said, my inner ten year old going can we get her? Huh? Can we? Can we? On the way home in the car Walter chuckled, "I don't know whose eyes were more pleading - hers or yours." What is up with fireworks on New Years Eve - did I miss the memo somewhere? I thought fireworks were only for the 4th of July - or am I just getting that old?

When we lived in Italy the New Year's fireworks displays were incredible and last about 30 minutes.

Oooh, I'm liking the Casual Friday Fireworks, too. I like the kind with the big bang, followed by a lot of sizzlers.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'd forgotten about Hogmanay. Apparently New Year's IS a pagan holiday (Solstice), changed to the current day with the switch to the Gregorian calendar. You're supposed to open your doors and windows for the last mins of the year and yell and clash post (and set off fireworks?) to drive out the spirits of the old year.
So, uh, Happy Hogmanay! I guess you'll be old-spirit-free thanks to your neighbours. :)
Maybe we could do fireworks for National Fire Safety Day.

ReplyDeleteCandace - Fireworks on casual Friday is good, but on National Fire Safety Day is, well, transcendent. Happy Hogmanay! May 07 be a banner year for open doors, windows, and most of all noisy posts!
