Just looking


After finding it dead, I charged my motorcycle battery all night and coaxed the bike back to life after dumping a bit of fuel into the carburetor. The little 250 cc Suzuki rice burner, torquey as a dragonfly, was always an eager beast, prone to leap from a trembling standstill, and take me with it.

But I end up mindlessly trolling the shady neighborhoods off the golf course, going slow, letting the dappled serenity wash over me. Pieces of domesticity appear and slide away. In this airy lassitude there's a growing sense that I may recover the sheer pleasure in just looking.

    That's a 250cc rice burner? Looks like a samurai sake swiller to me.

    And you can slow dance on it?

    At first I thought these were 1st-rate stock photos. But that's not your style. I 2nd the motion - you do have some kind of knack goin' on there, Joe.

    It's a baby cruiser - modeled after its big brother Marauders, which accounts for its looks. But it's a very easy ride, and gets 70mpg too.

    (Seems I have some affinity for a couple of useful toys, which my friends have kindly noted.)

Agatha

It must have been close to Christmas, but on which side, I don't quite  remember. I suspect it was sometime in the January doldrums when all was  frozen and gray. My friend Walter decided it was a good day for a dog. To get  one, that is. "I know I'm me, because my little dog knows me," Walter once  quoted Gertrude Stein. With his boyfriend Joseph away in the hospital, the house  had an unaccustomed empty feeling. And it had been without a dog for too long.  The shelter was in Ann Arbor . We piled festively into the car for the outing. It didn't take long to find her, a black and white ragamuffin puppy, so excited to  see us that her tail seemed to wag her whole body. "This one?"
